India Wins Inaugural T20 World Cup

INDIA claimed the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup, beating Pakistan in a thrilling final overnight.

India have beaten Pakistan by just five runs to lift the first Twenty20 cricket World Cup - their first major trophy since 1983.

India won the toss to bat first and Gautam Gambhir soon knocked up 75 runs to help his side reach 157-5.
Pakistan started well in response, but Irfan Pathan and Rudra Pratap Singh took three wickets each to see them end on 152 all out in the final over.

Misbah ul-Haq threatened to steal victory from India at the death with four sixes in his 43 but Joginder Sharma had him caught trying to spoon a ball over fine leg with three balls to spare.

Pakistan needed 13 runs in the last over bowled by Sharma. After first ball going for a wide, Misbah-ul-Haq hit the second deliver for a six. But he was caught by Sreesanth while trying to play the ball behind the wicketkeeper.

The stunning victory not only added a glorious chapter to India's cricketing history but also made amends for the team's inglorious exit from the ODI World Cup in the West Indies six months ago.

Pathan was named the man of the match, while Pakistan's Shahid Afridi was given the man of the tournament award for his all-round performance.
